About Us and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

  • Dr. Andrew Spice founded The DBT Clinic in 2022 after being a co-founder of the former Toronto DBT Centre from 2016 to 2021. Many members of our team have worked together for more than 6 years.

  • We are passionate about providing effective, evidence-based treatment to our adult and adolescent clients.

  • DBT helps people to manage difficult emotions more effectively, and to improve the quality of their lives.

  • Our next Adult DBT Group start dates are April 16th, April 23rd, and April 30th.

  • What is DBT?

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is an effective psychological treatment for people who struggle with intense emotions. DBT helps people learn to change emotions that are not working well for them, as well as to accept emotions when it is helpful to do so. The core purpose of DBT is to help people improve their lives through a balance of acceptance and change, and ultimately to build what we call “a life worth living.”

    Self-harm
Intense negative emotions (e.g., sadness; anxiety)
    Impulsive, self-damaging behaviours (e.g., binge-eating; shoplifting; overspending)
    Substance abuse
    Difficulties with anger management
    Difficulties with relationships
    Chronic feelings of emptiness
    Eating disorders

  • Evidence that DBT Works

DBT has been widely researched for more than 20 years. It is considered the gold-standard treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder, and is associated with reduced risk of self-harm, suicidal behaviour, depression, anxiety, and numerous other negative outcomes (e.g., NHMRC, 2013). DBT is also associated with positive outcomes such as improvements in overall adjustment, social adjustment, and treatment participation (e.g., Kliem et al., 2010).
